Wookiee Fest & Friends 2026 – A Weekend Celebrating the VR6 Community
Where it all began
The inspiration for Wookiee Fest comes from Wookies in the Woods, an annual North American gathering that has brought VR6 enthusiasts together since 2007. What began as a small meet has grown into an event attracting more than 250 cars and over 600 attendees each year.
But why "Wookiee"?
The nickname was born from the unmistakable sound of the VR6 engine.
"The term 'Wookie' began as a reference to the sweet rumble of the R32 exhaust note echoing through the Great Smoky Mountains on a dark, desolate night."
Since then, the name has become part of VR6 culture worldwide, representing not just the engine, but the passionate community that surrounds it.
Bringing Wookiee Fest to Australia
Long time Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) enthusiast Ian Gonzaga created Australia's first Wookiee Fest in 2024.
Having owned a range of VR6 powered vehicles, including a Mk4 Golf R32, an R36 Passat and his extensively modified Mk2 Audi TT featuring a 3.6-litre VR6 Quattro conversion, Ian wanted to create an event centred around the people behind the cars.
The inaugural event attracted more than 20 cars, followed by a larger gathering in 2025 at Winton Motor Raceway, the second event attracted over 30 vehicles attended alongside optional track sessions during Winton Fun Day with people travelling from Sydney and Canberra to attend.
Rather than focusing solely on polished show cars, Wookiee Fest is about bringing enthusiasts together to share stories, exchange technical knowledge, help each other solve problems, and celebrate one of the most charismatic engines ever fitted to a VW or Audi.
It's a welcoming community built around great people and an even better soundtrack.
Wookiee Fest & Friends 2026
This year's event headed to New South Wales for a two day weekend, beginning at Pheasant Wood Circuit in Marulan.
Despite a wet start, the weather quickly cleared to provide excellent conditions for both the Show & Shine and optional track sessions. Around 40 cars attended, representing an impressive variety of VR6 powered machinery.
Highlights included:
Multiple R36 Passats, including a rare manual swapped wagon
A Mk3 Golf Cabriolet running an R36 VR6 conversion
Ian's 3.6 VR6-powered Audi TT
Mk3 Golf VR6s
Several Mk4 Golf R32s
A Mk5 Golf R32
A genuine left-hand-drive Mk4 Golf R32
Plus plenty of unique builds from across the VR6 community.
As always, one of the biggest highlights wasn't just seeing the cars—it was hearing them.
Watching the field charge down Pheasant Wood's main straight before lifting, downshifting and powering into Turn 2 created the unmistakable chorus that has made the VR6 legendary. For many spectators, that soundtrack alone was worth the trip.
2026 Award Winners
The annual Wookiee awards recognised a range of standout vehicles from across the weekend.
🏆 Best Wookiee Sounds - Mk3 Golf 2.8 VR6 Supercharged
🏆 Best Wookiee Stance – Mk3 Golf 3.6 VR6
🏆 Best Wookiee on Track – Mk1 Golf 1.8 Turbo
🏆 Best Wookiee Friend (Non-VR6) – Audi B5 S4 Wagon
Once the track sessions wrapped up, the group headed to the local pub where the conversations continued late into the evening—because no great car event really ends when the engines stop.
Day Two – VW Nationals
Many attendees stayed overnight before meeting early Sunday morning for a convoy to the 2026 VW Nationals at Fairfield.
The early departure allowed plenty of opportunities for rolling photography, with Alex Elder capturing the convoy as it travelled north.
The VW Nationals once again showcased the diversity of Australia's Volkswagen scene, featuring air-cooled and water-cooled vehicles, a swap meet, food vendors, family activities and award presentations.
A fitting end to the weekend saw Ian's VR6-swapped Audi TT take home 1st Place – Audis All Years, recognising the countless hours invested in one of Australia's most unique TT builds.
Thank You
